A Stakeholder workshop on ‘Synergy for Biodiversity Conservation and Fisheries based Enterprise Development in Sundarban Tiger Reserve’ held on 10th January, 2018 at Presidential hall, Hotel Middleton Chambers, Kolkata. This was a ‘Launch’ workshop of the project based on ‘Supporting Enterprise in Sundarban Tiger Reserve’ funded by RBS Foundation India. The program was inaugurated by Shri R. K. Sinha, PCCF and Chief wildlife warden, Department of Forest, Govt. of West Bengal, Dr. R. P. Saini, Additional PCCF and Director Sundarban Biosphere Reserve, Dr. Nilanjan Mallick, CCF and Field Director, Sundarban Tiger Reserve, Mr. Biswajit Roy Chowdhury, Secretary, NEWS, Ms. Ajanta Dey, Joint Secretary and Program Director, NEWS. In technical session, eminent speakers enlightened the participants regarding the conflicting issues of biodiversity conservation in capture fishery and scope of aquaculture practice as alternate livelihood option augmenting income and employment. In brainstorming session, a roadmap was prepared after group discussion on challenges and scope of aquaculture and market linkage while ensuring the biodiversity conservation of Sundarban Tiger Reserve.
