Nature Environment and Wildlife Society (NEWS) had successfully conducted and completed the Second WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT CERTIFICATE COURSE introduced by Centre for Continuing and Adult Education (CCAE), Vidyasagar University. The event took place from 4th to 9th September, 2019 at Binoy Badal Dinesh Bhavan, Vidyasagar University, Paschim Midnapore – 721102.
This effort aimed at disseminating knowledge and information through interactive, theoretical, hands on sessions and case studies about species, ecology, ecosystem and their interactions.
It was a rewarding and informative course for the diverse group of participants . The students were exposed to the principles of Wildlife Management and this would help them take critical decisions on their career prospects in related fields. The naturalists had enriched their knowledge base backed with scientific applications. Those present also had the opportunity of interacting with veteran scientists and managers in the various fields.
The course covered a variety of topics that included
* Concept of ecosystem and community ecology
* Biodiversity conservation and protected areas network
* Wildlife crimes and control: Acts and rules relating to wildlife protection
* Current wildlife management practices and peoples’ participation
* Wildlife census techniques and its role in conservation
* Tools for monitoring wildlife: Remote sensing and GIS, GPS devices, trap cameras, range finders etc
* Data collection, management and analysis
* Field-based practical sessions on use of tools and monitoring wildlife signs
* DNA fingerprinting in wildlife forensic science
* Eco tourism and community engagement: successful case studies
* Art of project writing, project cycle management, draft report preparation
Bird and Butterfly watching was a part of the outdoor field activity where one had the scope to interact with nature. Observation of live birds and butterflies in their natural habitat was not only a recreational activity but it instilled in one the love for nature and in turn aroused the need to conserve it.
Through the Wildlife Management Certificate Course, NEWS had helped create an awareness to ensure that our future generations would appreciate the natural world and the incredible species that are its residents.
