Nature Environment & Wildlife Society (NEWS), in collaboration with Assam Forest School, Jalukbari, organised an environmental awareness and knowledge-sharing programme on World Environment Day 2026 on 5 June 2026. Held under the theme “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future,” the programme brought together 73 participants, including students, teachers, forest officials and conservation practitioners.
The programme aimed to strengthen awareness of biodiversity conservation, wildlife protection and sustainable environmental practices among students and teachers. The event featured expert talks, interactive discussions, awareness presentations, student competitions and practical conservation activities.
The keynote address by Sri Rajendra G. Garwad, IFS, Chief Conservator of Forests, Research and Education Circle, Assam, highlighted the importance of collective responsibility in environmental conservation. Dr. Mayur Bawri, Project Manager, IKI-Living Lakes Biodiversity and Climate Project (LLBCP), NEWS, delivered a presentation on biodiversity and the ecological significance of Northeast India, including ongoing conservation initiatives at Deepor Beel under LLBCP.
Students participated in Mobile Photography and Write-up and Extempore Speech competitions, followed by prize distribution. Saplings were also distributed under the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” initiative of the Ministry of Environment Forest & Climate Change, encouraging participants to translate environmental awareness into practical action.
The programme provided a platform for environmental education, knowledge exchange and youth engagement, encouraging greater environmental responsibility and long-term conservation action.
