The rare Hispid Hare leveret (Caprolagus hispidus) sighted and photographed by NEWS wildlife researchers at Jaldapara National Park: The species was thought to be extinct since 1956, until it was rediscovered in 1971 in Barnadi Wildlife Sanctuary, Assam. Now it has been recorded from the southern Himalayan foothills from Uttar Pradesh through Nepal and West Bengal to Assam. Generally, Hispid Hare is nocturnal, elusive and solitary animal. It is listed in IUCN as Endangered, and listed in CITES Appendix I.
