Sale of organic #Black Tiger Shrimp produced under Integrated Mangrove Aquaculture, to #Badabon Farmers’ Producer Company Limited (BFPCL): #Sustainable Aquaculture in Mangrove Ecosystem (SAIME) project has been initiated in the Indian as well as the Bangladesh #Sundarbans to develop a functioning #multi-stakeholder partnership which will promote the sustainable management and protection of #mangroves along with shrimp-based #aquaculture to secure the #livelihoods of fishermen, and fish farmers of India and Bangladesh. As an activity of the said project, Integrated Mangrove Aquaculture (IMA) has been started in an area of 9.07 hectares at Chaital, Minakhan Block, North 24 Parganas. Seventeen shrimp farmers of Chaital have come together and adopted IMA in their fish farms, and a ‘Farmers’ Group’ namely, ‘Chaital Badabon Samannito Motsyo Chas Samiti’, has been formed by them. As the project also aims to develop a structured community based value chain involving the farmers, the group has also been linked with BFPCL, a Farmers Producers Company formed by the Sundarban farmers under the patronisation of NEWS. Today farmers of Chaital, sold their organically produced 16.95 Kgs Black Tiger shrimp to BFPCL instead of local market with a 4% higher price realisation than the local market. This is really a step ahead for integrating this conservation linked livelihood with a community governed value chain for better price realisation. #mangroves #aquaculture #livelihoods
