World Wildlife Day, celebrated globally every year on March 3, is an important day that seeks to raise awareness on issues that impact wildlife, forest based livelihoods, and forest wildlife management models. On this day the focus is trained on the wild animals & plants that inhabit our earth, the threat they are up against and the urgent need for responsible Governments, civil society, private sector actors and individuals to join forces and take action to conserve wildlife and our ecosystem. It’s a day when we celebrate the beautiful and varied forms of flora & fauna and be aware of the challenges faced by these species. Its also a day when we reaffirm our pledge to step up our fight against wildlife crime, which has economic, environmental & social impacts. This year the theme of the World Wildlife Day is “Forests and Livelihoods: Sustaining People & Planet.” The theme wishes to highlight the central role played by the forests, its species and the ecosystem services in sustaining the livelihoods of millions of people globally, particulatly of indigenous & local communities, with historic ties to the forests. This is in allignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development goals, and the commitments on alleviating poverty, ensuring sustainable use of natural resources and conserving life on this planet.
