The Guwahati Wildlife Division of Assam Forest Department organised several events on the occasion of World Wetland Day. Several distinguished guests attended, including a local MLA and Chandra Mohan Patowary, the Environment and forest minister, Assam. Deepor Beel is an important inland wetland and the event focused on the need to protect and restore it. NEWS collaborated with the Division in the planning and organization of events. Several activities were held like a cleanliness drive along the banks of Deepor Beel, bird-watching, drawing, painting, poster-making, and more. The cleanliness drive was looked after by Midway Journey, who separated and handled the segregation of the garbage for responsible recycling and disposal. A total of 74 kgs were cleaned up in half an hour ! schools participated in these activities, with over 200 student learning about the importance of wetlands. 5 experts spoke to the gathering, teaching them on the need to restore and preserve this precious habitat.
