Awareness is the first step in any conservation effort. Over the course of three weeks, in March, the NEWS team in Karaikal organised a seminar on the importance of Mangroves and Turtles. 270 students from Anna Arts and Science College, Avvair College of Women and Dr. M. Karunanidhi College participated in these seminars. As a follow-up to the seminars held in colleges, the NEWS team asked the students if they would be interested to volunteer in different events like beach cleaning, turtle walk and mangrove afforestation. More than 35 students from Anna College volunteered for the beach cleaning event at Karaikal beach. Similarly, 45 students from Avaiyar College and Anna College joined our Mangrove afforestation drive at Karukalachery fishing village. 30 students of Avaiyar College and Anna College participated in the turtle walk.
