🌱Mangrove Plantation in Mayiladuthurai🌱

Under a new CSR initiative by Axis Bank Ltd. with NEWS, the afforestation of 10.5 hectares with Mangrove saplings in the Mayiladuthurai district of Tamil Nadu began on the 17th of March. 96 members from the Chandirapadi Panchayat of the district accomplished this immense task, having planted 30000 saplings by 25 March! It is hoped that this initiative will help to build coastal resilience by planting mangroves in this region. A key component of this project is the participation of the local community. This community has been given training on how to plant mangrove saplings and monitor to ensure their survival thereafter.

Coastal communities suffer immensely due to natural disasters and take years to rebuild and recover what was lost. Mangrove forests have proven to be an effective bioshield against cyclones and storms which batter coastal areas. This plantation drive is the first of many, with several hundreds of acres more to be afforested by Mangroves!
