A partnership between NEWS and ONGC for CSR project engagement instituted with NEWS implementing its plans for mangrove afforestation near Karukalachery Village, Karaikal, Puducherry. Representatives from ONGC HSE Deptt, Cauvery Asset office, Representatives from Fisheries Deptt, local Gram Panchayats along with Ajanta Dey from NEWS attended the sapling plantation event. The team will plant mangroves on 6 hectares in their first year. Women from Karukalachery village participated with a lot of enthusiasm and they are the core drivers for the saplings generation in nurseries, plantations and monitoring of these mangroves.
With the changes the world faces due to climate change, coastal areas are under more threat from storms and cyclones. The impact of these natural disasters on the local population and the flora and fauna takes years to recover from. Mangrove forests are powerful coastal protectors and will not only protect local communities but also create a rich biodiverse environment to secure their Livelihoods which is one step closer to a healthier planet.
