The Nature Environment & Wildlife Society (NEWS) organized a Birding Session and Training Programme on Nature Guide on 26 June 2026 at Theopani Waterfall, Rani Reserve Forest, Kamrup, under its Citizen Science Programme.
The field-based programme brought together youth group members from Deepor Beel for an experiential learning session focused on birdwatching, butterfly observation, guided trekking and nature guide training.
The programme aimed to strengthen participants’ understanding of the ecological significance of the Rani–Garbhanga Reserve Forest landscape while developing practical skills in wildlife identification, nature interpretation and responsible guiding.
The training was facilitated by resource persons Mr. Prasanna Kalita and Mr. Ajay Rabha, who introduced participants to the habitat characteristics, biodiversity and ecological values of the reserve forest. Practical demonstrations covered species identification, habitat observation, ethical wildlife watching and field interpretation.
The session documented 35 bird species, 23 butterfly species and 12 odonate species. Participants also experienced the characteristic calls of the Western Hoolock Gibbon, highlighting the ecological importance of the forest landscape.
The programme demonstrated the value of field-based learning in building local youth capacity for biodiversity conservation, nature guiding, environmental education and sustainable nature-based livelihoods.
