Nature Environment & Wildlife Society (NEWS), under the Living Lakes Biodiversity and Climate Project (LLBCP), Published a book on ‘ Birds of Deepor Beel ‘ on 20 April 2026 at the Assam Forest School, Jalukbari, Guwahati. The event brought together various participants, including senior representatives from the Assam Forest Department, academic institutions, conservation organisations, local communities, and students from various institutions.
Authored by Renowned Conservationist, Ornithologist and an Advisor to NEWS, Dr. Anwaruddin Choudhury, the publication documents 352 bird species recorded across the Deepor Beel landscape, providing an important scientific reference for biodiversity conservation and future management efforts.
During the event, Dr. Choudhury shared insights from four decades of observations of Deepor Beel and discussed the wetland’s ecological significance, changing hydrological conditions and major threats to its biodiversity. Dr. Priyasa Saikia, Director of Assam Forest School, highlighted the importance of biodiversity documentation for students, researchers and conservation practitioners. Community representatives also shared their observations and perspectives on wetland conservation and local livelihoods. Dr. Mayur Bawri, Project Manager, IKI LLBCP, NEWS emphasized that the release of the book on the birds of Deepor Beel is far more than a documentation exercise—it is a powerful conservation tool. He stated that by scientifically recording the rich avifaunal diversity of the wetland, the book will serve as a vital document in strengthening the fight for the protection and restoration of Deepor Beel.
The event highlighted the importance of collaboration among scientists, government institutions, conservation organisations and local communities for the long-term protection of Deepor Beel. The publication is expected to serve as a valuable resource for conservation planning, awareness and policy advocacy.
