Celebrating Bird Diversity and Wetland Conservation at the Bird Meet

12th October 2026

On 12th October, the Bird Meet, organised at 4 No. Bhery Fishermen’s Co-operative Society Ltd., brought together 38 participants, including representatives from WIPRO, CINI and SAFE, along with college students who presented their work digitally on bird diversity, wetland ecosystems, and conservation.

The programme featured insightful sessions by Dr. Rudra Prasad Das, Coordinator of the Asian Waterbird Census; Dr. Amitava Majumder, Scientist B at the Zoological Survey of India; and Dr. Jayanta Sen, teacher and eminent birder. The experts shared valuable insights into migratory waterbirds, India’s endemic bird diversity, and the rich avifauna of the East Kolkata Wetlands.

Through expert interactions, student presentations, and engaging activities, the Bird Meet encouraged knowledge exchange and highlighted the ecological importance of the East Kolkata Wetlands as a vital habitat for diverse bird species. The event also reinforced the need for collaborative efforts to conserve wetland ecosystems and safeguard the biodiversity they sustain.

At Nature Environment & Wildlife Society (NEWS), we believe that fostering awareness, encouraging young minds, and bringing together diverse stakeholders are essential steps towards building a collective commitment to biodiversity conservation.
