Nature Environment and Wildlife Society (NEWS) is proud to share that the case study on the joint initiative of CESC Limited and NEWS to conserve Scheduled monitor lizard species at Budge Budge Generating Station (BBGS), West Bengal, has been shortlisted and highlighted in the Nature Positive India: Business Leadership in Advancing the Global Biodiversity Framework publication, launched at the 17th Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), being held in Yerevan, Armenia, from 19–30 October 2026. The publication was unveiled by Mr. Ashutosh Agnihotri, Secretary, MoEFCC, in presence of Chief Executive Officer of Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD), Director of International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) and other global leaders in biodiversity conservation.
Published by the CII India Business & Biodiversity Initiative (IBBI–CII), the publication highlights 11 leading organisations, CESC is one of them, selected from an assessment of 100 Indian leading companies for their exemplary practices in advancing nature-positive business action.
The case study showcases a science-based approach to biodiversity conservation in an industrial landscape, combining GIS-based monitoring, non-invasive surveys through transects and camera trapping, BBGS employee participation and targeted habitat enhancement to support the conservation of the Bengal monitor (Varanus bengalensis) and Asian water monitor (Varanus salvator), both protected under Schedule I of India’s Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
This recognition highlights the importance of integrating biodiversity conservation into industrial operations and demonstrates how science, collaboration and responsible habitat management can contribute to a nature-positive future.
At NEWS, we remain committed to bridging science with action for biodiversity conservation and sustainable coexistence between people, industry and nature.
Heartfelt congratulations and gratitude to CESC Limited for their commitment to safeguarding biodiversity and advancing a nature-positive future
