International Climate Initiative

2 February 2026

Nature Environment & Wildlife Society (NEWS), under the International Climate Initiative – Living Lakes Biodiversity and Climate Project (IKI-LLBCP), was delighted to commemorate World Wetlands Day on 2 February 2026 at St. Xavier’s School, Pamohi. The programme was conducted by the NEWS Young Lake Manager–Trainees with the objective of creating awareness among young students about the importance of wetlands, their critical role in sustaining life, and the urgent need for their conservation.

The session commenced with a warm welcome and brief introduction by the team, setting the tone for an engaging and informative interaction. This was followed by the screening of an educational documentary on wetlands and Deepor Beel, which enabled students to understand the ecological significance of wetlands through a strong local context.

Subsequently, a presentation titled “Wetlands: The Kidney of the Landscape” was delivered by the NEWS Young Lake Manager–Trainees. The presentation highlighted the vital functions of wetlands, including natural water filtration, flood regulation, climate resilience, and their role as biodiversity hotspots supporting diverse flora and fauna.

The programme concluded with an interactive session and quiz, encouraging active participation and reinforcing key learnings in a fun and engaging manner. The enthusiasm and curiosity shown by the students reflected a growing awareness and appreciation for wetland ecosystems.

NEWS extends its sincere gratitude to the school authorities of St. Xavier’s School, Pamohi, for providing this valuable opportunity to engage with young learners and foster environmental stewardship. Together, let us continue to celebrate, conserve, and cherish our wetlands for a more sustainable and resilient future.
