Katarniaghat WLS Wetland Day

To mark the importance of World Wetlands Day, 2026- Nature Environment and Wildlife Society (NEWS), under the “Human–Elephant Conflict Mitigation Project” supported by the Global Nature Fund, organized an awareness session on wetland ecosystems and their food chains with the Girjapuri Eco Club at the Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary.

The session highlighted the importance of wetlands such as Mahadeva Taal in the region. It began with an introduction to the ecological significance of wetlands, the wildlife they support, and their interconnected food chains. This was followed by a hands-on activity on wetland food webs to enhance students’ practical understanding. A special poem highlighting the cultural significance of wetlands was recited by the children.

In attendance were 40 students, along with their teachers, Gajmitras and members of the NEWS team.

NEWS expresses its sincere gratitude to all the participants who actively participated in the programme. On World Wetlands Day 2026, we renew our commitment to protecting wetlands through community stewardship, cultural continuity, and collective climate action.
