Mangrove monitoring at the Integrated Mangrove Aquaculture (IMA) farms of Chaital:

30 - Apr - 2022

Monitoring is the essential activity of any afforestation/restoration program for the mangroves. The mangroves, an integral component of the IMA farms, were planted at the Chaital IMA site on November, 2020. Till the first year, only the survivability and mortality of the mangroves were recorded by the NEWS team members with the active participation of the practising farmers. As the mangroves have attained the status of ‘Tree’, the height of the tree, Girth at Breast Height (GBH) are now being started recording from this year onwards. The monitoring includes assessment of growing stock of the vegetation through the calculation of the biomass, which will lead to enumeration of the carbon stock and sequestration rate in one hand. On the other, as the mangroves grow more, starts blooming and develop its root system, it will provide another benefit to the aquaculture with its leaf litter which on decomposition will contribute to the nutritional dynamics of the ponds leading to reap the harvest of this ecosystem-based culture system lowering the input cost for feed.  #shrimpaquaculture #aquaculture #blacktigershrimp #fishfarming #shrimpfarm #globalaquaculture #fish #polyculture #polyculturefarm #sustainability #GlobalNatureFund #BangladeshEnvironmentAndDevelopmentSociety #Naturland #Nature-basedSolution #Organic
