The Gangetic River Dolphin (Platanista gangetica) is endemic to the Indian sub-continent. The presence of the species indicates a healthy river ecosystem. However, the population has declined significantly in much of its distribution range. Habitat fragmentation and increasing pollution in freshwater ecosystems have adversely affected them. The species is listed as endangered by the IUCN and is placed in Schedule I in the Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. In India, the Ganga River Dolphin have been formally adopted as the National Aquatic Animal on 5th October 2009. National Dolphin Day is celebrated on April 14 every year. On this day, we celebrate dolphins — one of the most intelligent and friendly mammals in the world.#nationaldolphinday#dolphin#dolphinday#wildlife#nature#ocean#conservation#welovedolphins
