One of the most fragile mangrove ecosystems, the Sundarban

One of the most fragile mangrove ecosystems, the Sundarban constantly fights with the changing climate situation and increasing disasters. Agriculture in the Sundarban is a huge challenge on its own. To cope with the changing situation, under the West Bengal Accelerated Development of Minor Irrigation Project (WBADMIP), South 24 Parganas, sunflower cultivation by sapling preparation through micro-pot, a climate-adaptive method has been developed by Birinchibari and Srinarayanpur Water Users Association (WUA) at Birinchibari of Basanti block and Srinarayanpur of Patharpratima block:  The following benefits are seen in micro-pot method of cultivation:

  1. It requires at least two lesser irrigation to avoid extra water usage at Sundarban.
  2. Seeds can be sown at the right time.
  3. The yield is about one and a half or two times more than the traditional method.
  4. The land does not have to be ploughed.
  5. Weed control is not required.
  6. Required about 40% fewer seeds.
  7. Crops are usually free from any disease or insect infestation.
