“Protecting Our Shelled Guardians: Youth Pledge for Sundarban Turtles”

23 - May - 2024

To mark the occasion of “#WorldTurtleDay” Nature Environment & Wildlife Society (NEWS) organized an online event on the 23rd May 2024 to educate and raise awareness among the youth members of the eco-club of #Sundarban about the essential role played by turtles to maintain the ecosystem, the threats they face globally, and the need to protect and conserve their population.

During the event, Dr. Swati Das from NEWS, provided an overview of #turtles, #tortoises, and #terrapins, including their habitats and diets. She also highlighted the significant threats to turtle populations, such as #habitatdestruction, #overexploitation, #diseases, and #climatechange.

The youth participants recognized the essential role turtles play in maintaining ecological balance and pledged to protect the turtles of Sundarban. They vowed to raise local awareness and oppose the capture, consumption, and trade of turtles. Inspired by Dr. Das, they committed to becoming “Turtle Warriors,” mapping local turtle populations and participating in #conservation efforts.
