Save Nowi River Workshop | Science. Action. Accountability. Collective Responsibility.

On 2 September 2026, scientists, government representatives, environmental experts, industries and local stakeholders came together at ICAR-CRIJAF, Barrackpore, for a day-long workshop focused on the rejuvenation and long-term protection of the Nowi River in North 24 Parganas.

 

Recent assessments reveal significant pollution in the Nowi River, including organic and chemical pollution, nutrient enrichment, faecal contamination and concerning levels of heavy metals.

 

Even more alarming, among 43 textile dyeing and bleaching industries surveyed along the river, nearly 80% lacked a functional ETP or were not operating it effectively.

 

But reviving a river is about more than cleaning its water.
It means stopping pollution at its source, ensuring effective wastewater treatment, restoring natural water flow, protecting biodiversity, and continuously monitoring the health of the river.
 
The workshop explored practical and science-based solutions, including ETPs, CETPs, nature-based solutions, microbial bioremediation and long-term environmental monitoring.
 
The revival of the Nowi River requires all hands on deck—government, scientists, industries, local communities and citizens.
