On Earth day, the NEWS team in Karukalacherry, Karaikal celebrated the day with two events. One event reached out to 32 local fishermen and was focused on creating awareness on the many ecosystem services of mangroves, especially in creating a thriving habitat for fishing. The team also distributed safety gear- gloves, caps, and gumboots to the fishermen to help them as they fish and take care of the newly planted mangroves in the area.
The second event was a mangrove plantation drive- educating 17 Anna college students and 2 professors on mangrove plantation techniques while planting 500 mangroves. Community members engaged in the mangrove plantation and nursery also spoke to the group sharing their methodology and experience in mangrove afforestation and why they believe a mangrove cover is a necessity for them.
