On 7th October 2021, our organisation #Nature Environment and Wildlife Society (NEWS) did a workshop about “Otters of Sundarban” in Jharkhali, #Sundarban, as an entry point activity of the project entitled “Population dynamics and Conservation strategies of #Otters in Sundarban” with the Officials of South 24 Parganas Forest Division. NEWS team members consisting the Secretary Biswajit Roy Chowdhury, Field Biologist Ms. Ranjana Saha, CSR Coordinator Mr. Ayan Roy Chowdhury and Research Assistant Mr. Tayan Das were participated. From Forest Department, ADFO, Rangers, Beat officers and other officials of #South 24 Parganas #Forest Division attended the workshop. Sri Biswajit Roy Chowdhury and Ms. Ranjana Saha gave presentation to elaborate the objectives and importance of this study, work plan, different identification characters of two species of otters found in Indian Sundarban and data collection methods. They also explain the use of smart phones as GPS device. The NEWS team has distributed photographs of both the otter species for easy identification and sample of data collection sheets. The enthusiasm of the present forest officials was really encouraging and give a positive sign towards creating the base line data to conserve these species in this unique landscape.
