Workshop on “Understanding the dynamics of mangrove restoration in the eastern coast of South India” at Seagulls, Karaikal Beach Resort

09 - Oct - 2023

On September 29, 2023, Nature Environment & Wildlife Society (NEWS) organized a workshop on “Understanding the dynamics of mangrove restoration in the eastern coast of South India” at Seagulls, Karaikal Beach Resort, to address technical challenges in their ongoing 10 ha mangrove restoration and turtle conservation project in Karaikal coastal waters. Following advice from the Project Evaluation Meeting held on August 31, 2023, stakeholders including Dr. K. Kathiresan, a well-known mangrove scientist in India and also a member of several committees under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and government representatives discussed crucial aspects such as seed collection, channel digging, planting density, and monitoring. Valuable insights were shared, with government stakeholders suggesting corrections, especially in channel digging techniques, to enhance mangrove survival. The collaborative effort showcased commitment from the District Collectorate, forest, agriculture, fisheries, irrigation, local college professors, and the funding partner ONGC. Dr. K. Kathiresan’s expertise provided guidance for a successful mangrove restoration program.
Together, we all will continue to work towards a greener tomorrow!
