World Environment Day, 5th of June 2023, was celebrated by the women’s groups ‘Srijoni’ (The Creators) and ‘Sabuj Sathi’ (Green Companion) in Buraburir Tot and Gobardhanpur in Patharpratima Block, Sundarban through a number of activities in their villages. These events were organised by NEWS in partnership with Axis Bank. They began the celebrations with a clean-up drive, clearing the arterial roads in their villages of plastic litter. The women’s groups also held an awareness rally to mark the day. The message of the rally was the urgent need to preserve and protect nature, by planting mangroves and trees, not littering etc. To close the World Environment Day celebrations, they had a plantation drive. 100 mangrove saplings and a few neem and lemon trees were planted to contribute towards a greener and more resilient tomorrow.
