“Youth Leading the Way for Biodiversity Protection”

On May 22, 2024, eco club members from Kumirmari, Hingalganj, and Sagar of Indian Sundarban gathered for a youth panel discussion organized by NEWS to celebrate the International Day for Biological Diversity. The session underscored the critical importance of biodiversity, the gradual decline of biodiversity in the Sundarbans, and the emerging environmental challenges in their region. Serious issues discussed by the youths included the drinking water crisis during summer, the declining numbers of squirrels and birds, and the increased plastic pollution.
The youth participants proposed practical solutions such as implementing rainwater harvesting systems and conducting mass awareness programs to reduce groundwater usage and plastic pollution. They also emphasized the importance of cultivating indigenous seeds. Each participant pledged to safeguard biodiversity, reduce carbon emissions, and minimize food and water wastage as a commitment to environmental protection. A total of 24 passionate eco club members participated in this impactful webinar, striving for a more sustainable future.
Celebrating #InternationalDayofBiologicalDiversity with Maghuwapara Primary School
Nature Environment & Wildlife Society (NEWS) under the BMUV-supported #IKI–#livinglakesbiodiversityandclimateproject , organized a programme with the school students and teachers of Maghuwapara Primary School to observe International Day of Biological Diversity on the 22nd of May 2024. A total of 20 enthusiastic students and 3 teachers of the school actively participated in this event. Through audio-visual presentations, the NEWS team highlighted the critical importance of biodiversity. Discussion on relevant topics such as the proper functioning of the #foodchain, the significance of conserving the rich #localbiodiversity of #DeeporBeel, and the identification of both local and #migratorybirdspecies along with indigenous plants species within the ecological site were also done.
It was truly inspiring to witness the curiosity and eagerness of the students as they absorbed knowledge about their natural surroundings. Through interactive sessions and captivating visuals, the team aimed to initiate a sense of responsibility and attachment towards our precious environment.
