The organization contributes to climate and coastal protection through the long-term rehabilitation and protection of tropical mangrove ecosystems. In addition, NEWS is committed for the conservation of ecology and environment, wildlife, natural resources and sustainable livelihoods for an improved environment. terre des hommes Germany e.V. (tdh) is currently working with NEWS on a project to promote biodiversity and nature conservation in Sundabarns. In the past, the cooperation between NEWS and tdh mainly consisted of capacity building and joint networking within projects in West Bengal. This project ensures promotion of sustainable tourism in the project region, mangrove planting and formation of eco-clubs. It also makes sure the links with various stakeholders to ensure community led approaches to mangroves protection. The high dependence on agriculture of the population of Sundarban, which is adversely affected by climate change, hinders the economic growth of the region. Introducing eco-tourism as an alternative business will not only improve the livelihood of the people but also will promote nature and environment as invaluable natural resource.
