Funded By: West Bengal Biodiversity Board

Project Duration: 2017-2019

Objectives:

To document and compile ecological history and map the historical records of species distribution in West Bengal.

To prepare the present distribution map of the species in different wetland habitats of the state.

To identify the possible habitat requirements of the species and their relative abundance in different wetland habitats of West Bengal.

To identify the reasons and areas of human-fishing cat conflicts in West Bengal.

To facilitate and promote conservation measures for the species in West Bengal in a participatory manner involving local communities, Govt. Departments, NGOs, etc.

Outcomes: A review of available literature revealed that the presence of fishing cats has mainly been reported from parts of Howrah, Hooghly, South 24 Parganas, East Midnapore, and some protected areas in West Bengal. In the present study, we have documented the presence of fishing cats (with camera-trapped photographic evidence) from wetlands of Kolkata, Nadia, North 24 Parganas, Murshidabad as well as a few new locations of Howrah, Hooghly, South 24 Parganas, and East Midnapore. During the research project, around thirteen thousand local residents of West Bengal were interviewed as a part of the questionnaire surveys. Their local and traditional knowledge was very much useful in finding out many of the newly confirmed locations of fishing cat presence. Twenty-two out of twenty-three districts have been surveyed properly in the last two years following the proposed research protocol and we came up with eighteen confirmed locations of the State Animal. Some places were also very potential and based on the secondary evidence a distribution map of Fishing cat has been prepared with all the confirmed presence locations along with all the probable areas.

Project location: Wetland habitat of West Bengal

It also generates significant income from tourism in the Royal Bardia and Royal Chitwan National Parks (Nepal) and in the Katerniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary in India. The border area between Nepal and India has a very high density of Asian elephants .The population is estimated at around 100-125 . However, this area is also a centre of settlement for the growing population of the Nepalese Terai lowlands and the neighbouring Indian states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Through intensification of land use, primarily the conversion of forest into farmland and settlements , the natural habitat of elephants is becoming increasingly fragmented and fast diminishing. Due to this, conflicts between the human inhabitants of the Terai and the elephants are increasing. In their attempts to keep the migrating elephants away from their crops and homes, the inhabitants of the buffer zones of the national parks and elephant migration corridors suffer considerable damage to their belongings and loss of life every year These consequences threaten their very existence. Compensation programmes for damage caused by wildlife are inadequate, involving high bureaucratic hurdles and cannot create lasting acceptance for the coexistence of humans and elephants. The coordination of conflict reduction measures initiated by the state authorities and the local population is also inadequate and the locals feel it is not sufficient. Cross-border coordination of measures between Nepal and India, with coordination meetings every two years, is also insufficient to establish peaceful coexistence between the local population and elephants in this cross-border context. Project Objective: Improvement of the safety and protection of the local population’s harvests through harmonious coexistence between people and wild Asian elephants. Project Outcomes: 1,600 people in the affected communities are effectively protecting their homes, crops and lives from attack of wild elephants and living peacefully with them. The local population, especially small farmers and forest users, are aware of the behavioural ecology and land use of elephants and are warned of attacks so that they can react appropriately. The national park administrations and the competent forestry authorities have formulated measures and implement them together with land user groups and receive broad support in the cross-border context. Project Location: Katerniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary, Uttar Pradesh; Valmiki Tiger Reserve, Bihar

Climate change has affected the distribution of plant species and has resulted in changes in forest composition. Changes in species composition may therefore affect several ecosystem properties. There lies a strong association between the vegetation and its avifauna of a specific area. The indigenous species play a vital role in the ecosystem because they have evolved to be in a specific ecosystem and have a well-established role in the food web and nutrient recycling. It has been also observed that some of the indigenous forest plant and bird species are showing a gradual decline in population, both in southern and northern parts of West Bengal due to possible climate change, anthropogenic activities, and other factors like pressure caused by invasive alien species, diseases, etc. However, due to the absence of any scientific study, it is difficult to address this issue or to quantify and enlist those declining species. The project aims to advance the understanding of the population structure of various floral species in the forest ecosystem. Forests have always been exposed to various anthropogenic stresses such as grazing, illegal felling of trees for wood, firewood, and introduction of exotic species, etc. which affect the rejuvenation of the species. The effects related to climate change are gradual and difficult to discern quickly. A floristic study would help to develop strategies to stem the decline through artificial regeneration techniques, introducing these RETs in the plantation programme, protection through the Joint Forest Management programme, institutional capacity development, etc. thereby contributing to environmental conservation. This study is proposed to prepare an inventory of trees, shrubs and herbaceous vegetation, and associated bird species in the established ‘sample monitoring plots’ of South West Bengal, North Bengal plains, and North Bengal hills for long term monitoring.

Project Objective:

1. To establish permanent sample plots in respective forest areas of North Bengal hills for monitoring the population of the indigenous vegetation.

2. To prepare inventory of trees, climbers, shrubs and herbs for each of the sample plots for long term monitoring.

3.
