Restoring Ecosystem in Coastal Region of Sundarban through Mangrove Plantation

Enhancement of coastal resilience and restoration of ecological balance in the Sundarbans by planting 18,000 mangroves and ensuring their sustained survival through active management.

 

The project includes following objectives:

  1. To undertake the plantation of 18,000 mangrove saplings and carry out systematic mortality replacements to maintain a high survival rate of the mangrove plants.
  2. To improve biodiversity and protect coastal communities from climate-induced risks such as erosion, storm surges, and saline intrusion.
  3. To engage and build the capacity of local stakeholders and communities for long-term stewardship and maintenance of the mangrove ecosystem.
  4. To monitor and evaluate the plantation site periodically.

To increase and protect mangrove cover in 100 ha. at identified sites of Mayiladuthurai coast by 2025 with community participation.

 

The project includes following objectives:

  1. Restore and protect 100 hectares of degraded mangrove ecosystems along the Mayiladuthurai coast to strengthen coastal resilience against erosion and cyclones.
  2. Community Empowerment: Build the capacity of local communities, especially women SHG members, to lead mangrove restoration and adopt sustainable livelihoods.
  3. Enhance coordination among local governance bodies and departments for participatory planning, monitoring, and conservation.
  4. Demonstrate scalable, community-driven models linking mangrove restoration with climate adaptation and livelihood diversification.

This women-led mangrove restoration initiative in the Indian Sundarban aims to restore 15 hectares of degraded coastal land by planting 100,000 mangrove and associate species. The project empowers local women and communities through training, nursery development, and hands-on restoration, while enhancing biodiversity, increasing carbon stock, and improving climate resilience. Supported by local governance and driven by community monitoring using digital tools, the initiative builds long-term ecological and social sustainability in one of India’s most vulnerable coastal regions.

Promoting visibility of Eco-park as a bird refuge through photographic documentation.

The Eco-park, in Newtown is the largest park in Kolkata as well as in India, was established with the idea of urban forest ecosystem and sustainable ecotourism by the Govt. of West Bengal. The Eco-park is an excellent example of the urban and semi urban ecosystem. But photographic documentation of the avian diversity has not been done so far. This project ensures a photographic documentation with species checklist of the available birds in the Eco-park . It gives good publicity and is a great attraction as a bird refuge among birders, bird photographers, nature journalists and enthusiasts through multiple workshops involving bird experts/ornithologists.
Project Objective:
1) Photographic documentation of avian diversity in Eco-park.
2) Promotion about the biodiversity richness of Eco-park as bird refuge.
Project Outcome:
1) Photographic and video documentation of the species available will be generated for the Eco-park.
2) A checklist of birds of the Eco-park will be generated.
3) Publicity and attraction generation of Eco-park as a birding refuge among birders, bird photographers, naturalists and nature-journalists.
