The farmers of Chaital and Madhabpur have stocked hatchery-bred, PCR-tested seeds of Black Tiger Shrimps (Penaeus monodon) at their IMA ponds under the Sustainable Aquaculture in Mangrove Ecosystem (SAIME) project. There are several benefits of stocking SPFs instead of wildly collected seeds, as the seeds are Specific Pathogen Free (SPF) so it’s more disease resistant, especially to White Spot Syndrome Virus Disease (WSSVD). This also reduces the dependence on wild seeds which leads to the conservation of the biodiversity of the mangrove ecosystem of Sundarban.
