Natural Resource Management

The world has lost over 80 million hectares of primary forest area since 1990 and deforestation continues to deplete world’s forests at the rate of 10 million hectare per year. Wetlands are disappearing three times faster than forests. Land degradation is a serious global concern which is caused largely due to unsustainable agriculture practices and natural factors like climate variability and extreme weather events. The pressure on the land resources is increasing with the increasing population. All of these resulting in the triple crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution, and waste, exacerbating the situation. The expense of the earth’s natural capital cannot be compromised with economic development and growth. Natural resources provide livelihood to billions of people. Besides supporting the vulnerable population with livelihood and employment- Forests, landscapes, and the world’s ecosystems provide services such as biodiversity habitat, climate regulation, erosion prevention, crop pollination, soil fertility, and flood control. NEWS endeavours for sustainable use of these natural resources through sustainable management practices and Nature-Based Solutions with situation specific ecosystem-based approach, working closely with vulnerable communities.
