World Wetlands Day 2026 was commemorated through a one-day workshop on “Protecting Wetlands for Our Common Future” organized by the Nature Environment & Wildlife Society (NEWS), Karaikal, at the Department of Zoology & Wildlife Biology, A.V.C. College (Autonomous), Mayiladuthurai.
Community members from Sahapur Village, actively engaged with NEWS in wetland restoration and biodiversity conservation, participated in a two-day mangrove exposure visit to the Sundarban on 8th and 9th February,2026. A total of 25 participants, including members of the Poribesh Bondhu community group of Sahapur, local women and school students, took part in this enriching initiative organised by NEWS in partnership with Axis Bank Limited.

Community members of Karaikal, Puducherry are enthusiastically nurturing and monitoring the mangrove saplings planted over 6 hectares. They check the growth and survival of the saplings. Quadrants have been marked in the site which helps gather data on the growth and survival of mangrove saplings.
From the 16th to the 17th of May, NEWS organized a capacity-building session on Backyard Poultry Farming the under the Living Lakes Biodiversity and Climate Project at the Government Poultry Farm, Birubari. Dr Nayanjit Deka, Manager, Govt. Poultry Farm, and Dr Irshad Ali, Pathologist, Govt. Poultry Farm, conducted the training sessions. A total of 49 participants, from the Deepor Beel area, were trained on the various aspects of poultry farming such as farm management, disease prevention and control through proper vaccination, artificial incubation etc. Alternatives livelihoods like BYPF help reduce the dependency on the natural resources of Deepor Beel while also introducing a supplementary mode of income for local communities.
World Otter Day brings awareness to the 13 otter species around the world. Otters are the perfect environmental indicators. As they are at the top of the food chain and live in a variety of habitats, their presence means that the ecosystem is healthy and thriving. Otters in Southeast Asia are facing multiple threats, including poaching for the pet trade and habitat destruction. NEWS has been working in the Indian Sundarbans towards Otter Conservation. On the 24th of May, Ajanta Dey, Joint Secretary and Programme director of NEWS, was a panelist for the workshop on 'Policy Planning Transboundary Dialogue for Bluer, Greener & Inclusive Growth in the Sundarban through an Ecosystem-Based Approach' jointly organised by World Bank, Vivekananda International Foundation, and Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies in Delhi. Shri Bhupender Yadav, the Hon'ble Union Cabinet Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Labour and Employment made the inaugural speech. Ms Dey was part of a panel which discussed 'Ecosystem-based approaches and adaptive spatial planning to meet climate change challenges' in the context of the Sundarban.
Child protection and Gender sensitivity are two important and sensitive topics for any organization working in today’s world. A two-day training program was conducted by Nature Environment and Wildlife Society on 'Child Protection and Gender Sensitivity' for the employees of the organisation on 19th April and 20th April, 2023. 22 participants were present in the training program. On 13th of May 2023, the NEWS team in Guwahati participated in a cleanliness drive around Deepor Beel to create awareness about waste management and disposal. The drive was organized by the Guwahati Wildlife Division under “Mission Life” in collaboration with the National Centre for Sustainable Coastal Management (NCSCM), Chennai, an autonomous Centre under MoEF&CC, held at Deepor Beel. Pachariya Kushal Konwar High School of Kamrup District and Midway Journey, an NGO, also participated in the event. Around thirty-five kilograms of waste was collected in an hour. The students and participants were briefed about the pollution problems in Deepor Beel and its remedial measures through adopting a change in lifestyle and a proper waste disposal plan. Altogether 50 participants attend the event.

The community members of Chandirapadi Village, Mayiladuthurai district, Tamil Nadu visit the mangrove plantation site of 10.5 hectares. 5 quadrants have been marked in different locations within the plantation site. Every Saturday, community members visit the site to observe the growth of the mangroves and their survival rate.
The International Day for Biodiversity, on the 22nd of May, was commemorated by the Eco-clubs of Hingalganj, Sagar Island and Kumirmari through a survey of the biodiversity that can be found near their villages. This was followed by an activity where the children mapped the food web and food chain based on their observations. Eco club members were introduced to eco mantras which promote environment-friendly habits. They pledged to adopt one habit in their daily life and spread the message to generate awareness in their local community and protect local biodiversity.
o commemorate International Day of Biodiversity and World Turtle Day, the NEWS team in Guwahati held awareness programs with the students of two schools: 33 No. Primary School Chakardo and Chakardo Desh Bhakta Tarunram Phukan Middle English School. A total of 72 students were present for these celebrations. The NEWS team delivered 2 sessions- one focusing on the role of Biodiversity and its importance to the students and the second focusing on the Diversity, conservation and ecological role of Turtles. The students enjoyed the presentations and the discussions which took place. At the end of the session, students took a pledge to work towards the conservation of Deepor Beel.
To commemorate International Day of Biodiversity, the NEWS team organized a tree plantation in Karaikal. Representatives from the Aapda Mitra team (Disaster Management and Rescue team) and representatives from the Fisheries Department of Karaikal along with the NEWS team planted 50 trees along the main road to the fisheries harbour to restore the natural green landscape of the area.
Turtles are known to be a fisherman’s friend as they symbolize a thriving fishing population. The Fishery Department of Karaikal along with the NEWS team in Karaikal is rekindling this relationship between the local fishermen and the sea turtles who frequent these beaches to promote turtle conservation. 40 fishermen from 10 different fishing villages of Karaikal attended this awareness programme on turtle conservation on the 19th of April, 2023. The Program was organized in the training centre of the Fisheries Department at Kalikupam, Karaikal. The fishermen were briefed about the importance and threats to the turtles on the Karaikal coast along with mitigation measures which may be taken to control the mortality of turtles. The fishermen also responded positively. This Training and Awareness campaign was published in various local and national newspapers.
Today is World Migratory Bird Day! Water is essential to all life on our Planet. The theme this year focuses on preserving our wetlands and aquatic systems which is fundamental for all Migratory birds. Virtually all migratory birds rely on water at some point during their life cycles. But water and aquatic ecosystems are threatened by Habitat loss and fragmentation, Pollution and Climate change. Water management is key to sustainable development and vital for bird conservation.
